The symposium spaces we build must be correspondingly more sophisticated—attentive to questions of inclusion and representation, equipped with better facilitation tools, and integrated with digital platforms that extend the conversation beyond a single gathering.
A Call to Institutional Seriousness
The argument here is not that scientists should become generalists or that disciplinary depth should be sacrificed on the altar of breadth. It is, rather, that the academy's current institutional arrangements actively undervalue the connective work—the translation, the synthesis, the cross-field dialogue—that transforms specialized knowledge into solutions capable of addressing genuinely complex problems.
Addressing the opioid crisis required pharmacologists, addiction psychiatrists, sociologists, public health economists, and legal scholars working in genuine coordination. Understanding algorithmic bias requires computer scientists, civil rights lawyers, and social psychologists at the same table. Developing equitable AI governance demands that technologists engage seriously with political theorists and ethicists rather than treating those perspectives as decorative additions to a fundamentally technical enterprise.
None of this happens automatically. It requires deliberate institutional design: funding structures that reward collaboration, publication venues that welcome interdisciplinary work, and—critically—structured dialogue spaces where scholars from different traditions can do the difficult, necessary work of learning to understand one another.
That work is neither glamorous nor easily publishable. It is, however, essential. The disciplines that resist it do so at their own peril, and at ours.
